Peneliti Temukan Terumbu Karang Buatan Atasi Perubahan Iklim

JAKARTA – Sejak tahun 1950, bumi telah kehilangan separuh terumbu karang di lautan. Ketika suhu laut meningkat akibat pembakaran bahan bakar fosil yang tiada henti, hal itu semakin membahayakan ekosistem laut yang lemah.

Para ilmuwan kemudian mencari solusi, salah satu contohnya di lepas pantai di Texas bagian selatan. Peneliti membuat terumbu buatan raksasa seluas 2,5 mil persegi yang terdiri atas kapal-kapal yang sengaja ditenggelamkan, rel beton, dan balok kayu.

Hal ini bertujuan untuk menyerap karbon sekaligus menyediakan habitat bagi spesies laut. Proyek ini dibuat oleh para ilmuwan di the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley dan didukung organisasi nirlaba Friends of RGV Reef, dan juga menerima dana dari raksasa minyak Kanada, Enbridge.

Dikutip dari laman Mashable, Senin (13/11/2023), meski berinvestasi dalam beberapa proyek lingkungan hidup, namun perusahaan Enbridge mengeluarkan jutaan ton gas rumah kaca setiap tahunnya. Selain itu juga membangun jaringan pipa yang membahayakan planet bumi dan masyarakat adat, seperti yang dilaporkan oleh The Guardian pada tahun 2021.

Tim peneliti di balik terumbu buatan sedang mencoba untuk menentukan terkait konstruksi buatan manusia dapat berhasil dalam memerangkap dan menyerap karbon. Meskipun penelitian ini baru saja selesai pada bagian pertama dari penelitian selama dua tahun, hasilnya sudah cukup menggembirakan.

Tim telah menemukan bahwa terumbu karang sebenarnya menyimpan karbon. Hal yang perlu ditentukan lebih lanjut adalah tentang dampak yang signifikan yang diberikan.

Dengan perkiraan 25 persen spesies laut hidup di dalam dan sekitar terumbu karang, ekosistem bawah laut dianggap sebagai hutan hujan lautan. Meskipun baru-baru ini banyak ditemukan penemuan terumbu karang yang belum terjamah manusia, masih banyak upaya yang perlu dilakukan untuk memastikan kelestarian terumbu karang tersebut.
