Musim kemarau di Jawa Timur membuat produksi tembakau di Provinsi Jawa Timur bagus. Bahkan, tembakau Jawa Timur yang memiliki kualitas terbaik untuk rokok cerutu yaitu Tembakau Besuki Na Oogst kini produksinya mencapai 8.560 ton. Jumlah itu terbagi atas produksi jenis Na Oogst Tanam Awal (NOTA) mencapai 5.280 ton dan tembakau jenis Na Oogst tradisional sebanyak 3.180 ton.
Wakil Ketua Asosiasi Petani Tembakau Indonesia (APTI) Jatim Hendro Handoko mengakui bahwa permintaan tembakau cukup tinggi karena luas lahan tembakau di Jember berkurang. Berkurangnya lahan tembaku tersebut tidak lain karenanya banyaknya petani yang beralih menanam palawija akibat anjloknya harga tembakau tahun lalu.
”Harga tembakau tahun ini cukup bagus seiring dengan kualitas tembakau yang cukup baik. Salah satunya karena faktor cuaca yang cukup mendukung. Harga tembakau di sejumlah pabrikan di Jember kini berkisar Rp 40 ribu hingga Rp 48 ribu per kilogram,” sebutnya.
Meskipun harga tembakau bagus, ungkap Hendro, tetap saja banyak para blandang yang mempermainkan harga tembakau di tingkat petani. Hingga saat ini masih banyak petani yang tidak bisa menjual langsung ke pabrikan karena para blandang yang memegang peranan di pabrikan tersebut, sehingga harga mudah dipermainkan dan petani tidak bisa mendapatkan keuntungan yang banyak.
Masih menurut Hendro, harga tembakau tertinggi tahun ini adalah tembakau NOTA sebesar Rp 43 ribu per kilogram, kasturi Rp 42 ribu per kilogram dan untuk jenis rajang harganya sekitar Rp 39 ribu per kilogram. Tingginya permintaan tembakau di Kabupaten Jember masih tinggi karena banyaknya pabrikan yang membutuhkan bahan baku untuk membuat rokok. Di saat permintaan tembakau dari pabrik dan eksportir masih cukup tinggi, lanjut dia, namun lahan tembakau di Jember berkurang.
Sedangkan permintaan tembakau jenis Kasturi mencapai 14.980 ton, tembakau jenis Voor-Oogst 1.280 ton dan White Burley mencapai 400 ton. Seluruh produksi tembakau segala jenis di Jember tersebut berasal dari areal lahan tembakau yang luasnya mencapai 17.000 hektar.
